SSL is used to secure the data being transferred between two computers by applying encryption. If your web site is going to be transfering sensitive or confidential customer information, it might be wise to implement SSL.
Normally, data is transferred in a clear text format, without SSL it would be possible for a third-party to capture and view sensitive information, such as your login.
You will need to purchase an SSL Certificate and install it on your site to allow for total functionality. You will also need a dedicated IP address. The cost for the both is $1.25 a month for the IP and about $50 - $150 a year for a Secure Certificate.
